Skidaway Institute Internship

Skidaway dockThe UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) Internship Program

is a unique opportunity for students to step out of the classroom and practice scientific inquiry under the mentorship of world-renowned marine scientists. Located along the Skidaway River in Savannah, GA, SkIO is the research home to 10 faculty in the UGA Department of Marine Sciences. Their research spans the globe with interests including remote sensing, autonomous underwater vehicles, trace element chemistry, marine microplastics, and the ecology of microbes, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. Students with interests in the marine or environmental sciences benefit from placement in the laboratories of experts in the disciplines of physical, chemical, geological, and biological oceanography.

Purpose:To provide students with an opportunity to study estuarine and marine environments while cultivating their research and analytical skills

Sponsor:  Franklin College of Arts & Sciences

EL Area: Internship

Under the guidance of our faculty, interns work on projects that provide meaningful and substantive experiences. Students learn how to work within the framework of a collaborative group and grasp new skills and tools, all while living and working on the Georgia coast in a supportive culture of equity and inclusion.

 Dr. Clifton Buck

“The classroom is where we lay the foundation, but an internship at the Skidaway Institute provides the framework to build a career in science. Students work closely with faculty and may find themselves on our research vessel RV Savannah, marching through a salt marsh, or working with the latest in autonomous technology. We prepare interns for success in graduate school or wherever their career might take them."
