UGA Motorsports participants working in a group. UGA Motorsports Formula SAE Team is a unique Experiential Learning opportunity housed in the College of Engineering. Students from across all disciplines join together as a team to pursue a common goal of designing and building exceptional small-scale race cars. The Formula SAE divisions at UGA include Aero, Controls, Electrical, Frame, Powertrain, and Suspension.

Purpose: To enable students to use their classroom knowledge and soft skills in a real-life setting by working together to create a Formula SAE race car.

Sponsor: College of Engineering

EL Area: Creative

Design: Engineering students design and fabricate Formula SAE race cars from scratch. They follow specifications laid down by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Competition: After meeting all Formula SAE requirements, students take their vehicle to compete at international competitions where engineering colleges send their best to show case and compete in their created race car. Below is judges inspecting and testing the UGA Formula SAE vehicle at Lincoln, Nebraska.

John Mativo headshot “The Formula SAE provides students the opportunity to use their learned concepts, their lab-developed skills, and their interpersonal relations to work in teams that design, fabricate, and build complex systems that, when assembled, become one complete project.”
