IMPACT Service Breaks Site Leaders
The IMPACT Service Breaks Program
offers students a service-centered alternative to Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Participants devote their time to an experiential service-learning project that encourages significant awareness of social issues such as youth empowerment, public health, shelter and resource access, and environmental justice.
Purpose: To provide students with a service-centered project that fosters increased social awareness.
Sponsor: Student Affairs
EL Area: Service
IMPACT Service Breaks Site Leaders expand their leadership and interpersonal skills as they plan all aspects of their trip's experience, including scheduling of service, securing housing, identifying cultural exploration sites, budgeting, risk management, and alumni engagement. Site leaders design and facilitate regular post-service reflections centered on dialoguing about the intersection of social identity with critical examination of the service experience. Site leaders are also responsible for managing all participant group dynamics, concerns, and emergencies during trip experiences.
“IMPACT Service Breaks is such a unique experience for students. Not only are they doing service in a new place, but they are also learning about issues that are relevant to the community they are serving as well as the Athens community and the nation as a whole. Most notably, they get to learn more about who they are as individuals, build strong and lasting relationships with their peers, and develop skills and education that they can take with them beyond their time at the university.”
