Estonia is recognized for its incredibly advanced digital society and technological growth despite recently regaining independence in 1991. Only thirty-five years later, Estonia has completely transformed itself from a country struggling through Soviet occupation and entered the global stage as a technological hub. This image demonstrates Estonia’s dichotomy as a center for both historical and modern value. Old buildings with red and orange rooftops and the spire of town hall (which has been there since 1530) sit in the foreground. In the background are modern high-rise buildings. Throughout the trip, we had the opportunity to explore Estonia’s long history, including its prehistoric times, the medieval era, its decades of occupation, and its recent history as a modernized country. I was consistently impressed with how Estonia and its people were able to bounce back from their difficult and harrowing past. I especially admire how Estonians find value in both the old and new. Despite so much hardship, Estonia has always stayed true to its roots. Rather than pivot completely after regaining independence, Estonians focused on nurturing their culture through technology and social reforms. I found many of their technological advances to be very awe-inspiring, such as quick online taxes and online voting. I became curious to know how changes like these might be implemented in the United States to create a more functional and efficient society.
