Estonian Freedom

Throughout our study abroad experience, we learned about and heard many personal accounts of Estonia’s journey to independence. We watched The Singing Revolution, which documented a series of protests where Estonians resisted Soviet occupation through large, unified gatherings centered around the powerful weapon of music. We also had the opportunity to tour KGB prisons which existed to further enforce Soviet rule, suppress independence movements, and imprison or torture perceived enemies of the state. In addition, one of the most impactful experiences of this trip was getting to hear directly form individuals who lived through this time period due to its relatively recent occurrence in history. For example, a professor at the University of Tartu shared her personal timeline in terms of Estonian politics, and she spoke on her experiences during certain events such as the Singing Revolution and the Baltic Way. Hearing these stories firsthand made the history feel much more tangible and real rather than something from the distant past. This image represents the outcome of that struggle for freedom. The illuminated glass pillar serves as a memorial to those who fought for Estonia’s independence. Seeing it glowing at night made the moment feel much more reflective and powerful, and it reminded me that freedoms we often take for granted were fought for not too long ago. It gave me a much deeper appreciation for Estonia’s resilience and national identity.
