Bella Zuerner – Germany

When I first saw the Neuschwanstein Castle, I was in awe of its fairytale-like beauty as I had never seen anything like it before. As we toured the castle, I began to see how culture can blend imagination with history to shape identity. During the tour, we learned that King Ludwig II did in fact build the castle to resemble a fairytale which fascinated me. The castle challenged my assumption that important structures are always practical, and it instead showed me how art and storytelling can define a place. Coming from the U.S., I’m used to buildings valuing function, and this castle highlights a different cultural priority centered on beauty and nostalgia. However, I also realized that others may view the castle differently, like as a symbol of power, politics, or even dramatic or excessive rather than fantasy. This image represents the impact of the trip because it marks a shift in how I experience new places. Instead of simply observing, I now aim to actively question and reflect on new places that I travel to. Instead of only seeing a famous landmark, I began thinking about its deeper meaning and the perspectives behind it. The experience pushed me to look beyond surface-level impressions and really consider cultural complexity. It also made me really want to come back and learn more about the history and viewpoints with my family. Overall, this captured moment reflects how travel can expand my understanding and encourage me to engage more thoughtfully with the world.
