Sloth vs. Industry

The image captures the remarkable range and diversity of wildlife that defines Costa Rica. These two animals, the sloth and the monkey, represent two separate ways of living in the same environment. Sloths are known for their slow, deliberate movements, which they make while spending most of their time resting in the treetops. Their stillness allows moss to grow on their fur, providing a surprising advantage known as camouflage. In contrast, spider monkeys are energetically jumping from branch to branch. They search for their food in groups and are constantly exploring the expanses of the rainforest. Seeing these two animals so closely together made me reflect on the importance of balance and variety in nature. Despite their differences, both species have the ability to thrive in Costa Rica’s environments. Our trip to Costa Rica emphasized how intentional the country is about protecting their biodiversity and ensuring that there are areas protected under governmental law. With about 25% of the country being protected land, Costa Rica shows an unwavering commitment to conservation. These efforts ensure that there will still be habitats left for both sloths and spider monkeys in the future. Experiencing this firsthand made me appreciate the beauty of federally protected parks and the work that experts put in to keep these animals thriving.
