Plaza de la Democracia y la Abolición del Ejército

Learning about Costa Rica’s pride and identity as a country that abolished its military in 1948 was truly inspiring. At the center of the monument stands President José Figueres Ferrer, representing the leadership behind the decision to abolish the army. Beside him, a young girl holding an instrument symbolizes culture and the arts, while a young boy with books represents education. Together, these figures highlight the values that shape the nation’s future: leadership, culture, and education. The plaza as a whole reflects Costa Rica’s enduring commitment to peace over militarization. Our guide also paraphrased a powerful quote from former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Óscar Arias Sánchez: “…the tongue is the strongest weapon… the boots of the soldier will never touch this plaza…” This message came to life as I looked around: police officers overlooking the plaza, casually talking among themselves, bringing a sense of comfort rather than authority or threat. Adults, children, and our tour group strolled through the space, taking in the beautiful scenery. I felt safe in the officers’ presence, and the photo I took of them feels especially meaningful—almost symbolic of how peace, rather than force, defines the space and allows others to enjoy it without intimidation or fear. While Costa Rica is undeniably beautiful and loved by both citizens and tourists, learning about its dedication to peace gave me a deeper appreciation for the country’s values—its sense of safety, stability, and harmony between the people and the government. Citizens take pride in knowing that mothers will never have to send their children to war, and that the future is guided by education, culture, and strong leadership. This perspective was eye-opening and reflects an ideal that I wish our own country could strive toward.
